Adjunct Appointment to Clinical Psychology Program, Teachers College, Columbia University

In addition to my ongoing supervisory role within the Counseling Psychology program, I am pleased to join the Clinical Psychology program at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Starting in the Spring semester 2014, I will be teaching the Fieldwork in Applied Psychology course to masters-level graduate students.  This course provides students the opportunity to gain supervised experience working in a wide range of field placements throughout the city. Fieldwork sites may involve clinical practice, assessment, and/or research in clinical psychology.

Within the course, students work as a group to integrate theory with practice through group discussion of selected texts as they relate to their fieldwork experiences. Particular focus is paid to organizational features of fieldwork sites and the students’ own group process within the course as an introduction to reflective practice and professional socialization in clinical psychology.

The course culminates in a ‘critical experience’ paper, in which each student reflects upon whichever aspect of their personal fieldwork experience caused the most personal or professional disruption or tension. They are asked to reflect upon this experience as informed by a concept or theory of their choice from among the course readings. Finally, students are encouraged to draw upon the salient features of their critical experience to help clarify their goals and aspirations for their careers in psychology.
